What Does Bipolar Disorder Mean? 

Bipolar disorder is one of the most common mental health conditions, about 1 from every 40 people is diagnosed with bipolar. It is very common in children and adults but usually doesn’t get diagnosed until adulthood. 

It is very hard to get diagnosed with bipolar as it can take up to ten years from the time a person experiences symptoms to the time they actually get diagnosed.

Bipolar disorder definition is a mental health illness that brings severe high and low moods and changes in sleep, energy, thinking, and behavior.

People who suffer from Bipolar disorder can have periods in which they feel overly happy and other periods when they feel very sad and hopeless. 

Why Is It Hard To Diagnose Bipolar Disorder? 

Since bipolar is similar to other mental health conditions, people who get diagnosed with bipolar usually get diagnosed with something else first; depression or ADHD. 

Depression is a part of bipolar disorder, and most people are more familiar with what depression looks like. ADHD can also look very similar to bipolar disorder, especially in children.

Bipolar Disorder Symptoms

These are famous symptoms of bipolar disorder: 

  • Hopefulness, excitement 
  • Sudden joyful 
  • Restlessness
  • Rapid speech and poor concentration
  • Increase energy levels 
  • Less need for sleep 
  • Less of an appetite
  • Sadness
  • Loss of energy
  • Feelings of hopelessness or worthlessness

Even though that bipolar disorder is one of the most common mental health illnesses, it still hard to come to terms with having mental health illness.

People who are diagnosed with bipolar disorder usually deny that they have any problem, even that admitting can set them free. 

Even after a person learns they have bipolar disorder, it can be hard to accept its reality. Living with any mental illness can be really difficult, and bipolar disorder has its own challenges.

Being diagnosed with bipolar disorder and admitting that you have it will help you understand what you are going through and what you are experiencing.
