Congratulations on Your New Baby! Beware of Postpartum Depression.

Having a new baby can be a trigger for different emotions; from excitement and joy to fear and anxiety, it can also result in something you might not expect which is depression. 

Most of the new moms, especially after weeks from giving birth experience some kind of depression called Postpartum Depression, or baby blues. 

Postpartum depression may include mood swings, crying episodes, anxiety, lack of sleeping, and other symptoms. 

How can you deal with postpartum depression? When should you consult a specialist? What should your partner do in this phase? Can postpartum depression be dangerous?

What is postpartum depression? 

Postpartum depression (PPD)  is a mix of physical, emotional, and behavioral changes. Usually, these changes happen after giving birth. 

According to the latest reports, PPD is considered to be a form of major depression that usually begins after giving birth within 4 weeks. 

The diagnosis of postpartum depression is based not only on the length of time but also on the severity of the depression. 

Postpartum depression symptoms 

Postpartum depression or as known as Baby Blues has different symptoms which may last for a few days or weeks after your baby is born as: 

  • Mood Swings 
  • Sadness 
  • Suffering from anxiety 
  • Excessive crying 
  • Trouble sleeping 
  • Appetite problems 
  • Feeling of overwhelming 
  • Feelings of worthlessness
  • Panic Attacks 
  • Suicidal thoughts 

If the symptoms of postpartum last longer than expected or become more severe it is better to consult a specialist. 

Causes

The main cause of postpartum depression is the change in physical and emotional states for the mother. 

The dramatic drop in hormones especially (estrogen and progesterone) can contribute to postpartum depression. 

Emotional instability can play a role in triggering postpartum depression; lack of sleeping, anxiety, low self esteem, thoughts about taking care of the baby may all contribute to postpartum depression.

Does postpartum depression affect both parents? 

Although postpartum depression is usually known for affecting new moms, it also can affect new fathers. 

New fathers can experience postpartum depression too, how? 

Welcoming a new baby into the family can be a little overwhelming for both mothers and fathers. 

As for new fathers, they may feel sad or tired as well as feeling anxious due to the change in their eating and sleeping habits. 

Treatment 

According to the severity of the symptoms of depression, the treatment is decided. 

Treatment can take two paths which are medications and therapy or both.
